Sensor Strategy Key to Urban Challenge Success
Team Gray approached the 2005 Grand Challenge from the standpoint of integrators rather than inventors.
Our approach during 2007 to the Urban Challenge has not deviated from this strategy. Stated another way,
"not invented here" is a good thing. The flexibility to readily adapt to a wide variety of robotic actuation
systems, environmental sensors and navigation systems is a direct benefit of the software architecture
employed by the GrayMatter AVS™ and benefits the commercial application of the system. Changing sensor
or navigation systems feeding data to the AVS™ is analogous to changing a printer or scanner on your home
computer system. This means that the customer retains the flexibility of choosing in how a system is configured.
GrayMatter supports those changes by adding the particular driver software to facilitate proper communication with
the AVS™.
About GrayMatter, Inc.
GrayMatter, Inc. provides integrated software and hardware solutions that facilitate autonomous operation of motor vehicles.
The GrayMatter AVS™ integrates with virtually any commercially available environmental sensors and GPS systems to allow
the vehicle to navigate a selected route while dynamically avoiding obstacles and obeying traffic laws as would a human driver.
GrayMatter was founded in 2005 to participate in the DARPA Grand Challenge, a 132 mile race across the desert in which it was the
fourth-finishing team, and was semi-finalist in the 2007 Urban Challenge. For additional information, navigate to
